The 3 Worst Cooking Mistakes People Make

Cooking is not actually that difficult. Yes it is a skill and certainly the more advanced recipes are difficult, but the cooking that most of us will do on a daily basis is not. However there are still a lot of mistakes I see people making which ruin the meals they are preparing, or make things harder for them than they have to be. Here are some tips to help you avoid the most common mistakes I see:

Not using decent cookware: This might seem a little snobbish, but I think that quality cookware can make a difference in the quality of the meal you produce. The thing about cheap cookware is that it will have a base to the pots and pans which is made of stainless steel like the rest of it. Now stainless steel is wonderful for the sides and even the inside as it won't absorb the coloring from the food and is very hard-wearing, but it doesn't conduct heat as well as it could.

Good quality pots and pans will have an insert within the base made of a metal which conducts heat better, something like copper for instance. That stops you having hot and cold spots across the base of the pan which lead to the contents cooking unevenly and burning to the bottom of the pan.

Not planning enough: Even a simple meal with have a few different ingredients and procedures which you need to consider. First of all you need to make sure you have all the right ingredients, the last thing you want is to get halfway through a recipe and discover you are missing something!

However you also need to plan the cooking times for everything. If you know the meat is going to take the longest to cook then deal with that first and get it cooking before you even start chopping up the vegetables. Then move onto the thing which will take the next longest time to cook and so on until everything is cooking away nicely. Otherwise you could end up in a right mess if you have part of the meal cooking and then come across an item which you haven't put on yet that takes a lot longer than the rest to cook.

Getting distracted: We are all guilty of this, taking our eyes off the cooking and going to do something for 'just a minute'. The problem is we are all busy and so we are easily distracted, even finding a children's toy on the floor can distract you as you start to pick up all the toys and give the room a bit of a clean. The problem is you might be letting your pans boil dry or your meat cook until it is dry and burnt! Once you start cooking then stay in the kitchen the whole time so you can catch any problems quickly.

Hopefully those tips will help to prevent any major meal disasters from happening. If you are looking for some quality pots and pans then browse the cookware reviews over at FriendlyCookware.com to find out what the best items are at the moment.
